A city of tremendous historical significance, Thanjavur can still be regarded as the dotting guardian of Tamil culture. An agricultural hub, Thanjavur used to be the royal city of Cholas, Nayaks and Mahrattas during medieval period. Thanjavur still preserves and promotes classical arts and music, Bharatnatyam dances and the Tanjore style of painting. 74 big and small temples adore the landscape of Thanjavur. The most sophisticated is Sri Brihadeswara temple. It was built in such a way that its shadow never falls on the ground. The temple is 216 feet tall, and the dome of the temple rests on one granite rock. Most of the temples are masterpieces of Chola architecture. The Palace of Nayaks and the Mahrattas with its magnificent masonry is next to the temple.The Schwartz Church stands in the palace garden. The Palace houses an Art Gallery, Mannar Saroboji Saraswathi Mahal Library and Sangeetha Mahal. Lush green Sivagangai Garden is to the north of the temple. The Saraswathi Mahal Library has a compilation of rare manuscripts in several Indian and European languages. The eight-story victory tower built by Raja Serfojit at Manora, 65 kms away from Thanjavur is also worth a visit.

Thanjavur is well connected by road and rail with the rest of Tamil Nadu.The nearest airport is Thiruchirapally at a distance of 58 kms.
