About Kottayam
The word Kottayam is a composition of the words Kotta (meaning fort) and Akkam (meaning inside). This facinating city bordered by the lofty and mighty Western Ghats on the east and the Vembanad Lake and paddy fields of Kuttanad on the west is a land of unique characteristics. The city is full of lush paddy fields, highlands, hills and hillocks, extensive rubber plantations which makes it a desirable tourist place. Kottayam is one of the exotic backwaters sites attracting tourists throughout the year. This breathtaking place is situated on the southern side of Kerala with beautiful landscapes surrounding the city. It has Ernakulam on its north while the east is protected by Idukki district. The exotic Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta districts signify the southern part, whereas Vembanad Lake makes the western side of Kottayam even more striking.
